Buying a used ATV can work out great, but it’s not without risk – especially from a private party. Some quads have been used and abused so hard that they just aren’t a good buy, while others have been babied and cared for and will give you years of excellent service. The problem is that it isn’t the easiest task to tell the difference.

It’s not very different from buying a used car, which most of us have done. Nonetheless, it pays to study what to look for so you can be an informed buyer. Here are some inspection tips for used ATVs from the team here at East Bay Motorsports in Hayward, CA, the best dealership in the Bay Area!

Overal Appearance and Storage Conditions

When you go to check out a quad from a private party, find out how it’s been stored. Even in California where the weather is mild year-round, machines will last a lot longer if they’re stored inside. A four-wheeler left out in the elements may have damaged internal components, prematurely worn tires, hoses and rubber, faded paint, and more. You can also get an idea about how someone cared for the machine by its condition. If it’s dirty and chipped, it’s likely the owner didn’t maintain it properly.

Inspect the Fuel Tank

Bring a strong flashlight! Failing to look into the fuel tank might be one of the most common mistakes made by buyers. Open the quad’s fuel cap and check inside the tank. You want to see pure, light amber-colored fuel along with the metal interior of the tank. Dark liquid indicates old fuel and a neglected machine. You’ve got to drain the tank before using it. See any chunks or crud? Rust and sediment are generally a good reason to pass.

Start the Quad COLD

If you show up and the quad is warm or running, that’s a warning sign that the seller didn’t want you to witness a cold start. Warm vehicles usually start up with minimal fuss, but cold ones may reveal some problems. Take special note of what the exhaust looks like on a cold-starting machine. If you get enveloped in a stinky cloud, pass! Use your ears, too, and listen for any odd sounds or rattles on a cold machine.

Take your time and inspect used ATVs carefully, and you’ll learn a lot in the process while finding a better rig. And of course, you can buy a used quad from a dealer with a stellar reputation like East Bay Motorsports in Hayward, CA, serving the Bay Area powersports community.
