Early Years

During the 1950s, the Yamaha Corporation was looking for a way to better utilize its manufacturing facilities, which had lain largely dormant since the end of World War II. Though the company was primarily focused on manufacturing musical instruments, it was decided that the new division would produce motorcycles. The initial lineup was so successful that in 1955, the motorcycle division was split off into its own independent company – the Yamaha Motor Company.

1960s-80s

The Yamaha Motor Company soon became involved in both the domestic and international racing scenes. The company’s victory in the 1963 Belgian GP race allowed the company to expand internationally. This momentum carried the company into the 1980s, when the motorcycle industry shifted from producing basic but versatile models to more specialized bikes designed to fit a niche. Yamaha also began developing and building ATVs and PWCs. 

Today
